Why ride for 24 hours?

"Because I want to" is the fatuous and rather obvious answer in the George Mallory tradition. I suppose it's the ultimate doable cycling challenge for a cyclist who is really a bit of a loner and thoroughly non -competitive*

*More accurately read as "Hates losing".

I've cycled all my life, both commuting and having fun, but it took off recently when I did a fixed gear century last year. One hundred miles without coasting, and without changing gear. And as the picture proves, still smiling over 60 miles in. I've not used a geared bike for over a year now and my fitness and strength have improved amazingly.

So I entered Ride24 at Thruxton Park motor racing circuit to be run over September 7th and 8th. Myself and 29 other solo riders will keep plodding round while teams whizz around seeking victory.

I'll be happy with 400 miles. I think I can do it, but it'll be a real test of skill, stamina and strength. I've just started a training programme and I'll share that as I go along.
